17-Year-Old Gukesh Defeats Experienced Opponents in Candidates Tournament, Secures Spot in World Chess Championship

The 17-year-old chess player from Chennai, Gukesh, has emerged victorious in the prestigious Candidates tournament held in Toronto. This eight-player event is held to select the challenger to the world champion, although the venue for the contest is yet to be confirmed. Despite facing experienced opponents such as Hikaru Nakamura, Fabiano Caruana, and Ian Nepomniachtchi, Gukesh was able to maintain his lead and secure his victory in the final round. He only needed a draw against Nakamura to win, with Caruana and Nepomniachtchi just half a point behind him.

Gukesh’s impressive career took another step forward with this accomplishment, as he became India’s youngest grandmaster at an early age. He has now added another milestone to his impressive record by becoming the youngest ever Candidates winner. With this achievement, he is set to become the youngest contestant in the World Chess Championship. Gukesh’s position as a rising star in the world of chess is further solidified by this accomplishment.

Emil Sutovsky, CEO of FIDE (the global governing body of chess) shared on social media that Gukesh had won the Candidates tournament. The tournament was held in Toronto and was attended by eight players who were competing for the right to challenge the reigning world champion. Despite facing some of the best players in chess history, including Hikaru Nakamura and Fabiano Caruana, Gukesh was able to maintain his focus and emerge victorious.

In addition to being India’s youngest grandmaster at an early age, Gukesh is also known for his impressive performance on international stages. His victory in this tournament cements his place as one of the top young chess players in the world today.

Overall, Gukesh’s victory in this prestigious tournament is a significant accomplishment that will undoubtedly propel him further into stardom within the chess community. As he continues to develop his skills and gain more experience on international stages, there’s no doubt that he will continue to make waves in chess for years to come.

Sutovsky also congratulated all participants on their efforts and thanked them for contributing towards making this event successful despite ongoing challenges due to COVID-19 pandemic restrictions around globe.
