2019 World Record Inspires Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone to Become Track and Field’s Next Big Thing: Breaking the 50-Second Mark

In 2019, American Dalilah Muhammad broke the world record for the 400-meter hurdles. This feat inspired Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone to make key changes to her training regimen under Coach Bobby Kersee. McLaughlin-Levrone moved to 14 strides between the early hurdles, a change that propelled her to become a dominant force in the event.

McLaughlin-Levrone’s victory in the U.S. Olympic trials was by nearly two seconds over Anna Cockrell and more than two seconds over Jasmine Jones. Her incredible performance redefines what is possible in track and field, with many speculating about when the 50-second mark will be broken in the 400-meter hurdles race.

Edwin Moses, a hurdling legend, believes that it could happen soon. The possibility of breaking the mark as soon as the Olympic final on August 8th is a real one with McLaughlin-Levrone’s incredible achievements. With her growth as both an athlete and a person under Kersee’s guidance, she has set herself up for great success in this event and beyond.
