Navigating the Intersection of Technology, Migration, and Social Disparities: The Digital Border

In a world plagued by human rights abuses and increasing global inequality, technology continues to play an important role in various aspects of daily life. The disparities in race, economy, and society across the globe have led many individuals to seek refuge from conflict, extreme poverty, political oppression, or the effects of climate change. In 2023, the number of forcibly displaced people reached a record high of approximately 110 million. Unfortunately, governments and political movements in different countries have often used xenophobic rhetoric against refugees and migrants, blaming them for domestic instability or advocating for the externalization and privatization of borders.

This briefing aims to shed light on how migration intersects with technology, inequality, and human rights. Through previous research conducted by Amnesty International and other organizations, this report will highlight how new technology has contributed to human rights violations at borders worldwide. It will also provide an overview of the various types of technology employed by both state and non-state actors in the management of migration and asylum systems.
