Breaking down Men’s Health: Understanding the Most Pressing Issues and Prioritizing Prevention and Early Detection

Men’s Health Month promotes regular health check-ups and screening tests

As June marks Men’s Health Month, it is a timely reminder for men to prioritize their health. Dr. Rukan Ahmed, physician at Kettering Health Springfield, highlights the most pressing health concerns that men face, including heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol and certain types of cancer such as prostate and colon cancer.

While there are numerous health issues that can impact men, Ahmed acknowledges the challenge of motivating men to take care of their health. He advises that most men should begin routine prostate and colon cancer screenings at the age of 45. Men should also discuss their family history and lifestyle choices (such as smoking or vaping) with their doctors to determine if earlier screenings are necessary. Ahmed emphasizes the importance of prevention and early detection in preventing irreversible damage.

In addition to physical health, Ahmed stresses the significance of mental health in men’s overall wellbeing. Mental health is often overlooked or stigmatized among some men, leading them to neglect discussing their feelings with their doctors. However, Ahmed believes that prioritizing mental health is crucial for those who are predisposed to avoiding addressing their mental health concerns. Men should not underestimate the importance of caring for their mental well-being as it plays a significant role in their overall health and quality of life.
