Breaking Ground: UT Health San Antonio’s Science One Building to Revolutionize Healthcare Research in Cancer, Diabetes, and Aging

The construction of a new laboratory space facility, Science One, on the campus of UT Health San Antonio is set to begin. This $100 million building will provide state-of-the-art laboratory space to support research in cancer, diabetes, and aging.

The Science One building will stand five floors high and span 95,500 square feet. It will be located near Floyd Curl and Charles Katz Drive and house laboratories dedicated to researching diseases that impact the community the most. UT Health San Antonio plans to bring experts from each of these fields into the Science One building to collaborate and innovate.

Robert Hromas, the acting president of UT Health San Antonio, highlighted that the new facility will foster collaboration among experts, leading to innovative breakthroughs in healthcare for patients in San Antonio and South Texas. The Science One building is part of a larger expansion to the university’s research and patient care missions.

In addition to Science One, other new buildings on the northwest side of the campus include the Multispecialty and Research Hospital set to open in December 2024 and the Center for Health, focused on studying and treating neurodegenerative diseases. Construction on Science One is scheduled to begin on September 30 and is expected to be completed by August 2026.
