Breast Health Matters: Addressing Barriers to Annual Mammograms for Women

Don’t Forget: May is Women’s Health Month – Encourage the Women in Your Life Over 40 to Schedule a Mammogram

A recent study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has identified health-related social needs as significant barriers that can impact women’s health. Factors such as lack of transportation, dissatisfaction with life, and the cost of care all contribute to why women may not be receiving the recommended mammograms. Research has shown that approximately 35% of women over the age of 50 are not up to date with their annual mammogram exams.

As Mother’s Day approaches, Dr. Joseph Sutcliffe, a radiologist at Baptist M&S Imaging Center North Central, encourages men to motivate all women over the age of 40 to prioritize their health. Sutcliffe emphasized the importance of reminding loved ones to make time for their health, urging husbands, sons, and brothers to encourage their spouses, sisters, and mothers to schedule a mammogram. He stressed the significance of expressing love and concern for their well-being and the desire for them to live a long, healthy life.

Sutcliffe noted that women often prioritize the health of others before their own. In Texas, insurance companies are mandated to cover the cost of a mammogram without requiring a co-pay, including for those with Medicare and Medicaid coverage. However, there are still various clinics and hospitals that offer payment plans for those without insurance, as well as local nonprofits that can provide assistance for necessary healthcare needs.

In conclusion, it is crucial for women to prioritize their health and wellbeing, especially when it comes to preventative measures like regular mammograms. By addressing health-related social needs and overcoming barriers such as lack of transportation and cost concerns, women can take proactive steps towards maintaining their health. As a community
