The Minnesota Vikings are in talks to re-sign running back Cam Akers, who was acquired from the Los Angeles Rams in a trade last September. While Akers has been without a team since his contract expired in March, he is expected to pass a physical before signing with the Vikings again.
Akers, who is 25 years old, has had a quick recovery from injuries in the past. He originally came to the Vikings from the Rams and appeared in six games for Minnesota as a backup to Alexander Mattison before suffering an Achilles tear in November that ended his season. Despite this injury, Akers is known for his ability to recover quickly and returned just five months later to help the Rams win a Super Bowl title.
If Akers re-signs with the Vikings for a second season, he will be working with head coach Kevin O’Connell, who was previously the offensive coordinator for the Rams. However, it remains uncertain where Akers will fit into the running back depth chart as Aaron Jones and Ty Chandler are also options in the backfield. In his limited playing time for Minnesota last season, Akers recorded just over 200 scrimmage yards and caught 11 passes as a third-down option.
