Cannabis Use: A Driving Factor Behind Guernsey’s Mental Health Ward Admissions in 2023

In 2023, the number of patients treated on the adult mental health ward in Guernsey was slightly lower than in the previous year, despite a significant increase in admissions related to cannabis use. According to a report by the States, one in four admissions to the ward were likely linked to cannabis use, compared to only 4% in 2019 when medicinal cannabis prescriptions were introduced. While there may be other contributing factors, doctors believe that cannabis is a significant factor in these admissions.

The report revealed that 25% of the total admissions to the in-patient mental health facility were related to cannabis use. Although it is not definitively proven that cannabis is solely responsible for these admissions, the increase in cases suggests a strong connection. This trend is consistent with international experiences and is impacting individuals, carers, and the mental health service in Guernsey.

Despite the increase in admissions related to cannabis, referrals to the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service have also increased by 14% from 2022 to 2023. This growing need for early intervention highlights the importance of prevention and early intervention strategies for mental health issues.

Overall, while there has been an increase in admissions related to cannabis use on the adult mental health ward, Dr. Nicola Brink, director of public health, commended progress made since launching Guernsey’s Mental Health and Wellbeing Strategy in September 2023. Jo Cottell, CEO of Guernsey Mind also highlighted collaborative efforts across various sectors towards raising awareness of mental health and promoting prevention and early intervention strategies.
