A few months ago, a young Black gay patient in a southern state reached out to an artificial intelligence-powered chatbot for help with his relationship with sex. Feeling comfortable discussing this sensitive topic through the chatbot, he knew he would receive an immediate response without judgment. The chatbot reassured him that he was not alone in his feelings and directed him to a professional for further assistance.

The AIDS Healthcare Foundation, a nonprofit organization providing sexual health and HIV care in 15 states, developed the chatbot as a resource for patients seeking confidential support. The chatbot serves as a tool for educational information on sexually-transmitted infections (STIs) and can help manage appointments, deliver test results, and provide support to underserved patients who are vulnerable to infections like HIV. To engage patients in a unique way, the foundation decided to have the chatbot communicate in the voice of a drag queen.
