College Football Returns with North Carolina vs. Minnesota Showdown: ESPN’s First Rankings Release FPI and Record Projections for UNC

ESPN predicts UNC football program’s future before 2024 season

College football is set to make a comeback on television screens in the late summer, with North Carolina and Minnesota facing off in their season opener. Led by head coach Mack Brown, the Tar Heels have lost key players such as quarterback Drake Maye, linebacker Cedric Gray, and wide receiver Tez Walker to the NFL. While there is still talent remaining on both sides of the ball, many uncertainties remain heading into the new season.

Following spring practices, ESPN has released its first Football Power Index rankings for the 2024 season. UNC has been ranked No. 7 in the ACC with a FPI of 4.7, placing them at No. 42 overall in college football. The projections indicate that UNC is expected to finish with a record of 7.5-4.6 overall, with an 83.3 percent chance of reaching six wins. They have a 4.3 percent chance of winning the ACC and an 8 percent chance of making it to the College Football Playoff.

Despite a promising start to the upcoming season, UNC will face tough matchups, including a road game against Florida State and hosting NC State
