Cultural Understanding and Patient Well-Being: The Puangco Family’s Journey to Ava Cares Group Home

Group home in the Bay Area shines a light on diversity within the healthcare industry

The Puangco family from St. Augustine has emphasized the importance of diversity in healthcare for patient care. They have experienced firsthand how representation for different patient backgrounds and a deeper understanding of patient needs can make all the difference in their son’s well-being.

Collin Puangco, who is 33 years old, was diagnosed with autism at 18 months old and is non-verbal. His parents, Marco and Heather, have found comfort in the diverse staffing at Ava Cares in Brandon, where most of the staff are Filipino like him. After trying two other facilities that did not work out, Collin finally settled in well at Ava Cares.

The cultural understanding provided by the majority Filipino staff has made a significant difference in Collin’s comfort and well-being. Marco and Heather feel like they are surrounded by family when they visit Collin, bringing them great comfort and reassurance.

Ava Cares Group Home operates four facilities that cater to people of all backgrounds with disabilities, providing a home-like environment where cultural understanding plays a key role in the quality of care and comfort provided to residents. The Puangco family’s experience highlights the importance of diversity in healthcare and the positive impact it can have on patient outcomes and overall well-being.
