Cycling tragedy: Jonas Vingegaard and others injured in Tour of the Basque Country crash

Jonas Vingegaard Suffers Broken Collarbone and Ribs in Cycling Accident

On Thursday, Jonas Vingegaard, a two-time Tour de France winner, suffered a serious injury during a race crash on the fourth stage of the Tour of the Basque Country in Spain. While descending on the Olaeta climb, about 35 kilometres from the finish line, several riders slid straight on at a right-hand bend in front of the peloton. This caused a severe impact that left Vingegaard with a broken collarbone and several ribs.

Vingegaard’s team, Visma | Lease a Bike, described the incident as unfortunate and devastating for all involved. The crash forced both Primož Roglič of Slovenia and Remco Evenepoel of Belgium to withdraw from the tour due to their injuries. While Roglič managed to give a thumbs-up to a broadcast camera as he rode away in a car, Evenepoel headed to the hospital for further examinations.

The Danish cyclist’s team stated that they were taking things day by day and focusing on his recovery. They also wished Roglič and Evenepoel well in their recoveries.
