Datang Group Connects World’s Largest Operational Sodium-Ion Battery Energy Storage System in China

World’s biggest sodium-ion battery begins operation – pv magazine International

In July 2024, Datang Group successfully connected the first phase of its 100 MW/200 MWh sodium-ion energy storage project in Qianjiang, Hubei Province to the grid. This achievement marked a significant milestone for China’s state-owned power generation enterprise, making it the world’s largest operating sodium-ion battery energy storage system. The project, which is part of the Datang Hubei Sodium Ion New Energy Storage Power Station, consists of 42 battery energy storage containers and 21 sets of boost converters. It utilizes large-capacity sodium-ion batteries supplied by China’s HiNa Battery Technology and is equipped with a 110 kV transformer station.

The Qianjiang project surpassed China Southern Power Grid’s Fulin 10 MWh BESS project in Nanning, southwestern China, which was previously the largest operational sodium-ion system in the world. The Fulin project is also part of a larger 100 MWh project and uses HiNa Battery’s cells. The team behind the Qianjiang project faced numerous challenges but overcame them to make this remarkable achievement possible.
