Delaware State Ranks High in Fiscal Stability and Healthcare, but Struggles with Environmental Issues

Where does Delaware rank in U.S. News & World Report rankings?

Suzanne Thurman, the director of the Marine Education, Research & Rehabilitation Institute, recently discussed a fin whale that was stranded on Delaware Seashore State Park on May 5, 2024. Delaware is ranked as the 21st best state in the nation by U.S. News & World Report, just behind Connecticut and ahead of Maryland. The rankings are based on 71 metrics across eight broader categories, including fiscal stability, crime and corrections, education, health care, opportunity, economy, and natural environment.

Delaware’s highest ranking was in fiscal stability, where it was placed fourth in the nation. It also earned ninth place for health care, with healthcare quality specifically ranked as sixth in the country. Other notable top-ten rankings for Delaware were in business environment (third), healthcare access (tenth), and transportation (tenth).

However, Delaware’s lowest score was in the natural environment category, where it ranked 43rd in the nation. Pollution specifically positioned Delaware at 47th place
