Despite Challenges, Agricultural Sector Remains Resilient: Rural Mainstreet Index Declines but Farmers Keep Repaying Loans on Time

April Rural Economy Survey: Negative Territory for RMI

The agricultural sector is facing significant challenges, which has led to a decline in the Rural Mainstreet Index for eight consecutive months, according to the latest survey conducted by Creighton University economist Ernie Goss. Despite this, farmers were able to repay loans on time in April, even though farm equipment sales continued to decline. This was surprising given the low commodity prices and farm income that farmers are currently facing.

Farmers have been holding off on major purchases due to higher interest rates and market uncertainties. However, farmland prices have been on the rise for 53 consecutive months, indicating that there is still confidence in the value of agricultural land. Despite this, the overall outlook for the rural economy remains uncertain, with many farmers cautious about making significant investments until market conditions improve.
