Detroit Pistons Extend Impressive Young Star Cade Cunningham with $226 Million Contract Amid Struggling Season

Report: Pistons and Cade Cunningham agree to max contract extension in 2024 NBA free agency

Cade Cunningham has been rewarded for his impressive performance on the court with a five-year, $226 million contract extension from the Detroit Pistons. According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, Cunningham’s deal could potentially increase by $44 million if he earns a spot on an All-NBA team during the 2024-25 season.

Despite Cunningham’s individual success, the Pistons struggled as a team, finishing with a 14-68 record. However, Cunningham’s growth was evident throughout the season, especially as a shooter and playmaker compared to his second season where he was limited to just 12 games due to injury. The team faced a difficult stretch losing a record 28 consecutive games but Cunningham remained a bright spot for the team.

To further support Cunningham’s development and growth, the Pistons named J.B. Bickerstaff as their new head coach, signing him to a four-year deal. Bickerstaff will be tasked with nurturing Cunningham’s talents and helping him reach his potential as a star player in the league. He takes over from Monty Williams who was let go with $65 million remaining on his contract. The Pistons remain focused on building around Cunningham and are optimistic about his future with the organization.
