Devastating Landslide Buries Houses in Ticino and Valais: 3 Lives Claimed, Countless Missing

Swiss Tragedy: Three German Women Killed in Landslide

A landslide in southern Switzerland buried several houses in Ticino over the weekend, claiming three lives. The victims were two women aged 73 and 76 from Baden-Württemberg, who are believed to have known each other. However, it is difficult to determine which house each victim lived in due to the devastation caused by the landslide.

The Maggia River wreaked havoc in the area, sweeping away a bridge near Cevio, making the upper Maggia Valley only accessible by air. Five other individuals remain missing in Ticino following the storm, and authorities are actively working to locate them. Military personnel have been dispatched to the region to assist with cleanup efforts, as parts of the valley are still without electricity and drinking water.

Meanwhile, neighboring canton Valais also suffered significant property damage due to heavy rain and flooding of the Rhône River. A tragic incident occurred where a 67-year-old German individual lost his life after being caught in floodwaters in the basement of a hotel. The devastation caused by the storms and resulting flooding has had a profound impact on both cantons, with authorities actively engaged in search, rescue, and recovery operations.
