FIFA’s Controversial Decision: Saudi Arabia to Co-Host 2027 Women’s World Cup Amid Backlash

The 2027 Women’s World Cup will have Saudi Arabia as a co-host, along with the United States, Canada, and Mexico. FIFA has solidified its relationship with Saudi Arabia through a sponsorship agreement with Aramco. This deal extends until 2027 and includes major tournaments such as the 2026 men’s World Cup.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has established strong connections with Saudi Arabia and its Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman since before the 2018 World Cup, which was sponsored by Russian state energy company Gazprom. While the bidding process for the 2034 World Cup was opened to only FIFA member federations in Asia and Oceania, Saudi Arabia was widely expected to win due to its ties with FIFA and its financial resources. The kingdom was confirmed as the only candidate by the end of that month.

The Visit Saudi tourism board has been a minor sponsor of past FIFA events, including the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. However, they did not sponsor the 2023 Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand due to objections from organizers.
