Fire on Maple Street in Sparta Prompts Immediate Evacuation

On Tuesday night, a fire broke out in a building on Maple Street near E. Averill Street in Sparta, prompting an immediate evacuation of the premises. Reports of smoke and flames coming from the building led to the response of seven fire departments and multiple emergency agencies.

Upon arrival, Sparta Fire Department (SFD), Alpine Township Fire Department, and Kent City Fire Department observed heavy smoke and flames emanating from the roof of the building. Due to its size, crews from Algoma, Walker, and Rockford Fire Departments were also mobilized to the scene to assist in containing the fire.

The SFD determined that the fire originated in a mixing room, resulting in a foul odor and caustic smoke that caused minor eye and breathing irritation. This prompted a response from Kent County Emergency Management and Grand Rapids Fire Department’s Hazardous Materials Team to address the situation. The fire was extinguished quickly, but it took some time for the smoke to dissipate. Fortunately, the materials were contained within the room and did not escape into storm drains.

The company operating out of the building is currently aiding investigators in determining the cause of the fire. As of now, there are no reported injuries as a result of this incident. Follow FOX 17 on social media for more updates on this developing story.
