Private well owners in flood-prone areas are being advised by state health officials in St. Paul to take precautions to protect their wells from contamination during flooding. To minimize the risk of contamination, it is recommended that individuals contact a licensed well contractor to inspect and make any necessary repairs to their wells. This could include fixing cracks, extending the well casing above flood levels, or temporarily replacing the vented well cap with a watertight cover.
In addition to these actions, individuals should also stock up on clean water to last for a few days and shut off power to the well pump to avoid pumping floodwater into their plumbing system. If time is limited, covering the well with a heavy plastic bag or sheeting and securing it with electrical tape can help reduce contamination. However, if floodwater does reach the well, it should be assumed to be contaminated and not used for drinking or cooking until it recedes.
