Following in Dad’s Footsteps: Charlie Woods Qualifies for USGA Championship at 15 Years Old

Charlie Woods secures spot in inaugural USGA championship

Tiger Woods’ 15-year-old son, Charlie Woods, has qualified for his first USGA championship. Charlie shot a 1-under 71 to win the U.S. Junior Amateur qualifier at Eagle Trace Golf Club in Coral Springs, Florida. He was one of four players who advanced to next month’s U.S. Junior at Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. The championship will be held from July 22-27, with the first two days being stroke-play qualifying.

Charlie felt elated after his victory and said, “It feels amazing to qualify for my first USGA championship.” He is excited about competing in the U.S. Junior Amateur next month, especially since it will take place at Oakland Hills, a historic golf course that has hosted numerous major tournaments. Charlie started his round with a bogey and double bogey but rallied with five birdies and just one birdie the rest of the way. He was the only player to break par on the day of qualification.

Charlie’s father Tiger Woods won three U.S. Junior titles (1991, 1992, 1993) in four appearances and held a 22-1 match play record in the championship while he played as an amateur golfer before turning pro in 1996. In his first appearance in 1990 at age 14 years old, Tiger reached the semifinals but did not win it all that year like he did for his last title in 1993 when he was just a teenager of 20 years old.

Charlie has been following in his father’s footsteps by training hard and taking part in various golf tournaments across different levels of competition
