Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro Charged with Embezzlement over $3.2 Million in Jewelry Gifts

A Brazilian newspaper, G1, has reported that former President Jair Bolsonaro has been charged with embezzling jewelry worth $3.2 million (€2.96 million) during his time as head of state. The jewelry was gifted to him and his wife by the Saudi Arabian government and other entities. Some of the items were discovered in a government employee’s luggage when they returned from Riyadh in October 2021 and were seized by customs authorities at Sao Paolo International Airport. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Bolsonaro’s successor, has called for an investigation into the matter, with one of his cabinet ministers labeling Bolsonaro’s actions as “smuggling.” Despite these charges, Bolsonaro’s lawyer has remained silent on the situation. This is not the first time Bolsonaro has been accused of criminal activity. Last year, police raided the homes of several military officers for allegedly aiding him in selling jewelry to the United States. Authorities mentioned that while the items had been sold, the transactions had not been properly reported. In March, Bolsonaro faced charges of falsifying his COVID-19 vaccination records.
