French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal: Exploring Possibilities for Increasing Taxes on the Wealthy

What proposals does Gabriel Attal expect regarding taxing the wealthy?

During a recent interview on TF1 at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 27, French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal was asked about the possibility of increasing taxes for the wealthiest individuals in the country. In response, Attal expressed his willingness to consider credible proposals from parliamentarians, social partners, and associations of elected officials.

Attal emphasized that France is not a tax haven for anyone and highlighted the country’s national wealth tax and real estate wealth tax as examples of effective taxation policies. He also pointed out that in France, just 10% of the population pays 70% of income tax, showcasing the special tax on high incomes that exists in the country.

When it comes to taxing super profits, Attal acknowledged that it is a divisive issue within his majority. However, he did mention that he is open to discussing changes to the taxation on super profits of energy companies, which only brought in 600 million euros in 2023.

The Prime Minister outlined two key considerations when it comes to any future discussions around tax reform: no increase in taxes for the middle class and retirees, and no hike in taxes for businesses. These are important factors that will be taken into account as any changes to the French tax system are considered.
