From Build-A-Business Club to Eco-Friendly Tree Planting: Sinsheimer Elementary School’s Quest for Sustainability

In San Luis Obispo, students at Sinsheimer Elementary School are taking part in a hands-on learning experience with the Build-A-Business Club. Recently, the club joined forces with Junk Girls, a local business, to create and sell products to raise money for a community project.

Their efforts paid off as they managed to raise $1,500 through their product sales. The students then worked with the Environmental Center of San Luis Obispo (ECOSLO) to plant three trees at Sinsheimer Park on Arbor Day as part of ECOSLO’s Urban Tree Planning program “Keys for Trees.”

Genevieve Palazzo and Sophia Bastidas, both 5th graders at Sinsheimer Elementary, were thrilled about the project and grateful for the support and involvement of Junk Girls and ECOSLO in helping them make a positive impact on the environment and the community.

Grant Helete, ECOSLO’s program coordinator, emphasized how important it is for organizations like ECOSLO to work with schools to promote sustainability initiatives. The tree planting at Sinsheimer Park is just one example of how these partnerships can help achieve San Luis Obispo’s goal of becoming carbon-neutral by 2035.

Overall, the collaboration between students, local businesses
