From Hartland Graduate to Successful Woodworker: The Story of Cap’s Artistry

Hartland graduate begins new woodworking venture in town

Cody Powers, a Hartland graduate, has turned his passion for woodworking into a successful business called Cap’s Artistry. Powers specializes in creating furniture and home décor from locally sourced wood and enjoys the art of woodworking and the satisfaction of creating pieces with dedication and care.

Initially starting on Etsy, Cap’s Artistry has now expanded its offerings to include larger products like coffee tables, dining tables, and buffet units. Each piece is handmade with attention to detail and can take upwards of three weeks to complete, especially custom orders that are completely unique. Powers takes pride in the value he puts into each custom piece he creates, as opposed to mass-produced furniture from stores like IKEA.

Cap’s Artistry offers unique services like CAD simulations for customers to preview custom pieces in their home and the use of locally sourced wood from Southeast Michigan. Powers hopes to continue growing his business and eventually move into a dedicated workshop space on his property. He envisions hiring additional help to assist with the workload as the business expands.

Although still in the process of growing his business, Powers acknowledges that the first two years are always the most challenging. He values the learning experiences that come with running Cap’s Artistry and is focused on continuous improvement and growth. As he looks towards the future, Powers is optimistic about the potential for his woodworking business to thrive.
