The expansion of University Health in San Antonio is set to take off with the groundbreaking of the Wheatley clinic. Named after African American poet Phillis Wheatley, the three-story, 60,000-square-foot medical complex will be located near the Wheatley Sports Complex on the East Side. This new clinic will open in early 2026 and offer primary care, urgent care, and pharmacy services along with serving as a secondary location for the University Hospital’s Institute for Public Health.
The project received support from the Bexar County Commissioners Court, who allocated $40 million from the American Recovery Act Plan to support this expansion. University Health’s President and CEO, George B. Hernández Jr., expressed his vision for this new clinic as an opportunity to improve access to care and bring state-of-the-art technologies, specialists, and health education resources closer to home for thousands of families on San Antonio’s East Side.
Precinct 4 County Commissioner Tommy Calvert applauded the project’s dedication to promoting a healthy community in San Antonio’s Eastern Triangle region. He thanked advocacy groups for pushing for healthcare improvements in their area and recognized University Health and the Commissioners Court for responding to their needs. This expansion marks another step forward in providing quality healthcare services to residents across San Antonio.
University Health has been working tirelessly to provide quality healthcare services to its community members since its establishment. With this latest expansion project, they hope to continue fulfilling their mission of improving access to care while bringing cutting-edge technology and expertise closer than ever before.
