From Tragedy to Empowerment: A Community Day in Honor of Vaughn Parker Jr.

NFL player from Norfolk hosts community event to raise awareness for men’s mental health

On a somber day in June 2023, the Norfolk community gathered at Lake Taylor High School’s football stadium to honor the late Vaughn Parker Jr., who tragically took his own life. The event, organized by Jalyn Holmes, who plays for the New York Jets and is Parker’s stepson, aimed to raise awareness about men’s mental health.

The day was filled with fun and excitement as participants enjoyed music from a DJ, played in bounce houses, and indulged in delicious food. Mental health resources were also made available to those in need.

Towards the end of the event, a memorial walk was held in honor of Parker. Holmes took to the microphone to speak about his stepfather’s unwavering commitment to uniting the community and emphasized the importance of treating others with kindness and love. He also highlighted the work of Vaughn’s Way – a non-profit organization founded by Holmes and his mother Tasha Holmes Parker that aims to bring awareness to men’s mental health.

The attendees were encouraged to take advantage of local resources available in Hampton Roads such as Community Services Boards, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, and the National Alliance on Mental Illness. These resources offer support, information, and crisis intervention for those in need.

In conclusion, the Community Day event at Lake Taylor High School was a poignant tribute to Vaughn Parker Jr., reminding us all of the importance of mental health awareness and support within our communities.
