From Welterweight to Middleweight: Georges St-Pierre’s Journey, Health Struggle, and Retirement from MMA

Georges St-Pierre reveals the health condition that prompted his retirement

Georges St-Pierre recently revealed that his move up to middleweight was the primary reason behind his retirement from MMA. In 2013, he relinquished his welterweight belt and took a break before returning in 2017 to challenge Michael Bisping for the middleweight title at UFC 217. Although St-Pierre emerged victorious and became a two-division champion, the journey to 185 pounds had a significant impact on his physical health.

During the process of gaining weight, St-Pierre developed ulcerative colitis, which led him to give up his middleweight title and retire shortly after defeating Bisping. On the “Pound 4 Pound” podcast, St-Pierre explained that ulcerative colitis was a major factor in his decision to retire. Initially thinking it was a life-threatening condition, he turned to intermittent fasting to manage his symptoms and found relief without needing medication.

Before being diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, St-Pierre experienced severe symptoms and feared the worst. Despite this, he delayed addressing the issue until after his fight due to the invasive tests required for a proper diagnosis. St-Pierre credits intermittent fasting with improving his condition and allowing him to avoid medication and debilitating symptoms he previously experienced.
