Garden City Public Schools Take Home Multiple Awards at Long Island Science Congress with Exceptional Freshman Science Research

Science Research Students Earn Recognition at Science Congress

Garden City Public Schools’ Freshman Science Research class stood out at the Long Island Science Congress this spring. The students, numbering 46 teams and approximately 860 students, competed against each other in various categories. Two groups from the class were recognized for their exceptional work.

Firstly, Jack Armstrong, Arya Rad, and William Schwarz earned a spot at the New York State Science Congress Junior Division in Syracuse after placing first in their category at the Long Island Science Congress. Their research was given an Honorable Mention award for its outstanding quality.

Secondly, Taylor Maguire, Julia Flaherty, and Susanna Ryan achieved Highest Honors at the Long Island Science Congress with their project titled “Examining the Impact of Exposure to Air Freshener Compounds on Drosophila melanogaster Behavior.” This project earned them two additional prestigious awards: the Daniel Wilson Memorial Award and the Mel Cowgill Award. The dedication and hard work of these students showcase the strength of the science research program at Garden City Public Schools.

The Freshman Science Research class proudly displayed their awards from the Long Island Science Congress during a special ceremony held at school. The achievements of these students demonstrate the exceptional talent and scientific inquiry skills within the program. With their successes at both regional and state levels, these students have demonstrated their commitment to research and scientific exploration.

Overall, it was a proud moment for Garden City Public Schools as they witnessed their students excel in scientific research and make significant contributions to science education on Long Island.
