Alex Lyon of USA sustains injury at IIHF World Championship, ruled out for tournament

Alex Lyon, the USA goaltender who sustained an injury during the team’s win over Germany at the IIHF World Championship, has returned home. The specific nature of his injury is not yet confirmed by USA Hockey, but it is believed to be related to his left hand. He left the game in the second period after both teams were near the crease trying to pick up a puck close to his glove hand.

Trey Augustine, a Detroit Red Wings prospect, stepped in and helped lead the team to a 6-1 victory in their first win of the event. Lyon had started both games for the Americans and played impressively with a .940 save percentage through parts of five periods before he was injured. Prior to this tournament, Lyon had been third goaltender at the 2015 tournament and won a bronze medal despite not playing.

The 31-year-old Lyon had a successful season with the Red Wings, playing a career-high 44 games for the team that missed out on playoffs. He finished with a 21-18-5 record, two shutouts, and a .904 save percentage while sharing duties with James Reimer and Ville Husso.
