Google Data Center Faces Backlash over Backup Generator Permit: Residents Urge Company to Be Mindful of Health Impacts and Alternatives.

Concerns of Residents Regarding Potential Health Impacts of Google Data Center Air Pollutants Discussed at IDEM Public Hearing

Last night, a public hearing was held by the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) in Fort Wayne to address air quality concerns related to the Google Data Center. The objective of the meeting was to discuss an application for the property that would allow for the use of backup diesel generators.

The meeting took place at Ivy Tech Community College-Coliseum Campus Building and gave residents the opportunity to submit written comments, ask questions, and express concerns about air pollution resulting from the backup generators in the permit. Many people expressed worries about potential health impacts on the community caused by air pollutants.

Local resident Jorge Fernandez emphasized that the health of neighbors is his top priority and urged Google to be considerate neighbors while exploring alternative options to backup generators to minimize negative health effects.

Although the meeting was seen as productive, public advocate Gina Burgess expressed disappointment at limited options available moving forward. She noted that IDEM lacks authority over zoning, odor, or noise in relation to ongoing construction and can only consider how well the project aligns with federal and state air emission laws.

During the meeting, IDEM provided a Citizens Summary clarifying their regulatory jurisdiction and outlined steps involved in reviewing permit applications. Public comments will be accepted until July 8th and those unable to attend can submit feedback via email referencing permit number. IDEM will review all comments before issuing a decision on permit application.

Overall, public hearing underscored community concerns about maintaining air quality standards while accommodating new Google Data Center project in Fort Wayne. Residents are encouraged to continue engaging with IDEM throughout permit review process to ensure that environmental and health considerations are adequately addressed.
