Healthy Fiesta: How Metro Health Ensures Food Safety at San Antonio’s Annual Celebration

Metro Health inspectors prioritize safety at Fiesta food vendors

Fiesta has returned to San Antonio once again, bringing with it the delicious food and drinks that make this festival so special. However, it is important for everyone to ensure that what they are consuming is safe for their health. In order to do just that, a KSAT crew followed inspectors from the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District to see how they ensure food safety at Fiesta events.

During a recent inspection, Deborah Liu, an environmental health officer with Metro Health, highlighted the risks of consuming unsafe food. She emphasized that even food that may seem fine at first could actually be dangerous if it does not meet temperature requirements. This is why inspectors closely monitor vendors at every Fiesta event to ensure that food is properly stored, vendors are following hygiene protocols, and there are adequate handwashing and sanitation stations available.

If an inspector finds any violations during these inspections, vendors are given the opportunity to correct them immediately. Failure to comply can result in the vendor losing their permit and being shut down altogether. It’s important for attendees to be vigilant and report any concerns they have about food safety by calling 311.
