Houston Christian University to receive $60 million complex to enhance science and nursing programs

Houston Christian University recently approved a $60 million budget for the construction of a new science, engineering, and nursing complex at their May 21 quarterly meeting. This complex, named the Sherry and Jim Smith Engineering, Science, and Nursing Complex, is set to begin construction in January 2025 and be completed in time for the fall 2026 semester.

The new complex will be a three-story, 71,000-square-foot building that will house science laboratories, classrooms, instructional and simulation labs, makerspace learning environments, and faculty and administrative offices for the School of Nursing and College of Science and Engineering. The construction aims to address the growing demand for STEM-related and nursing jobs and help prepare HCU students for high-demand professions such as data science, cybersecurity, and kinesiology.

Dr. Katie Evans, dean of the College of Science and Engineering emphasized that the new complex will offer students critical learning experiences and high-quality physical spaces that complement HCU’s faculty expertise and curricula. She highlighted the opportunity for HCU to transform existing spaces into active learning classrooms that support high-impact teaching and learning practices.

In addition to the new complex, HCU offers a wide range of majors
