Huairou Science City: A Leading Hub for Chinese Scientific Research and Innovation

Huairou Science City boosts China’s reputation in research and development

In May 2017, a relatively empty suburb with farmland in Huairou received approval to be transformed into a high-tech and innovation hub known as Huairou Science City, located an hour’s drive from central Beijing. Over the span of seven years, more than 37 science facilities have been established in the area, including six major national scientific and technological institutions, making it a key location for important scientific breakthroughs.

Today, Huairou Science City is recognized as one of the most concentrated areas for cutting-edge scientific research. The city has successfully attracted over 23,000 leading researchers, including 77 academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, as well as 28 highly cited international scientists and more than 600 foreign experts. This rapid development is part of the broader initiative by Beijing to create a dynamic science center that combines fundamental research, technological services, and innovation to enhance the country’s global competitiveness.

Huairou Science City is specifically highlighted as one of the four science centers in China’s 14th Five-Year Plan, which outlines national economic and social development goals and long-term objectives through 2035. The plan aims to further promote scientific and technological innovation by investing in research infrastructure and talent development programs. As such, Huairou Science City continues to be a focal point for scientific advancements in China.
