Hungary’s Anti-Democratic Actions and Kremlin Ties: What to Expect from Hungary’s EU Presidency

Viktor Orban and Hungary Assume EU Presidency: Eurosceptic, Authoritarian, Putin Supporter?

Hungary has assumed the Council of the European Union presidency for the next six months, taking over from Belgium on Monday. Despite concerns in Brussels and Europe, Hungary has promised to act with impartiality during its term. However, there are fears about Hungary’s anti-democratic actions and its links with the Kremlin, particularly regarding Russia’s offensive in Ukraine.

At a handover ceremony in Budapest, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban expressed his joy at taking over the presidency. The government aims to act as an impartial mediator while also presenting its vision of Europe and pushing things in the right direction on various issues.

Orban has been known for his combative approach towards the EU, often criticizing Brussels technocrats and opposing military aid to Kyiv. He has pledged to make Europe great again, echoing a slogan made famous by Donald Trump. Despite facing opposition within the EU and in the European Parliament, Orban remains firm in his stance on various issues.

During his presidency, Orban plans to focus on economic competitiveness, combating illegal immigration, and advancing Western Balkan countries towards EU membership. He aims to ease restrictions on the rule of law to access EU funds but may face opposition from experts who argue that his room for maneuver is limited due to Belgian and EU institutions working to limit potential instability during Hungary’s presidency.

Despite differences in opinion and approach, both Belgium and Hungary have expressed optimism for the future of the EU. While Hungary will work to advance its agenda during its presidency while striving to act in the interest of all EU citizens
