Inclusive, Sustainable, and Stunning: The New Garonne River Bridge Connects Two Cities

The Simone-Veil bridge in Bordeaux is now the widest in Europe

The bridge over the Garonne river, with a length of 549 meters and a width of 44 meters, is not just designed for motorists. It offers space for pedestrians and cyclists, creating a more inclusive transportation option. Located in Floirac on the right bank and Bègles on the left bank, it connects the two cities.

The bridge features two lanes for cars, two lanes for buses, a cycle path, and a forecourt for pedestrians. This design prioritizes the safety and convenience of all road users, making it a truly multi-functional infrastructure project. Bertrand Arnauld de Sartre, the project manager for almost four years, ensures that the different lanes are clearly defined and accessible.

The innovative design of the bridge aims to encourage sustainable modes of transportation such as cycling and walking while accommodating the needs of motorists and public transport users. By providing dedicated lanes for various types of vehicles, it promotes a more efficient and balanced use of road space.

Apart from its functional design, the bridge offers a scenic view of the Garonne river and the surrounding landscape. It serves as a symbol of modern infrastructure development and sustainable urban planning, contributing to the overall quality of life in the region.

The completion of this bridge represents a significant milestone in efforts to create more accessible and inclusive transportation options for all residents and visitors in this area. From Wednesday July 3rd onwards it will be open to public use; marking the beginning of a new era in transportation connectivity.
