Indigenous Teacher Selected as Science Communication Fellow to Explore Deep-Sea Biology and Geology with Nautilus

Chinle Native Selected as Science Fellow for Deep Ocean Exploration in Navajo-Hopi Observer

Kim Etsitty, a teacher at Navajo Pine High School in Gallup McKinley County Schools, has been selected as a 2024 Science Communication Fellow by the Ocean Exploration Trust (OET). Originally from Chinle, Arizona, Etsitty is one of 13 fellows chosen from schools, science centers, and non-profit organizations across the Pacific and North America.

Etsitty is thrilled to be part of this groundbreaking STEAM initiative that will explore deep-sea biology and geology within the Palau National Marine Sanctuary. She sees her selection as an opportunity to connect with classrooms worldwide and discuss the importance of water while sharing Indigenous ecological knowledge. Etsitty hopes to inspire future Indigenous scientists by showcasing the Diné worldview to leading scientists on board Nautilus.

As part of her fellowship, Etsitty will have access to NautilusLive.org, which provides an opportunity for her to engage with learners globally and share her insights and experiences with a wider audience. This experience will not only enrich her understanding of ocean exploration but also give her valuable tools for teaching about science in the classroom.
