Officials confirmed that a Japanese climber has passed away while attempting to scale one of the highest mountains in northern Pakistan. Rescue efforts are ongoing to locate his missing colleague. The climbers had gone missing on Wednesday while climbing the mountain known as Spantik Peak, also referred to as Golden Peak due to its distinctive golden hue at sunrise and sunset.

Karrar Haidri, the secretary of the Alpine Club of Pakistan, stated that after a dayslong search operation, rescuers were able to recover the body of one of the missing Japanese climbers. The Golden Peak is a popular destination among climbers. Haidri mentioned that the body has been moved to a safer location and Pakistani authorities are coordinating with the Japanese Embassy in Islamabad to confirm the climber’s identity.

The Japan Alpine Federation had earlier reported that two Japanese climbers, Ryuseki Hiraoka and Atsushi Taguchi, were attempting to reach the summit of the 7,027-meter Spantik Peak. Climbers face significant risks in Pakistan’s mountainous regions, with several fatalities occurring each year. Notably, K2, one of the world’s highest mountains, is located in Pakistan’s north.
