Joe Biden and Donald Trump: Will They Face Off in Presidential Debates?

Trump agrees to debate with Biden and asserts he is prepared for the showdown.

President Biden recently proposed that he and his rival in the November elections, Donald Trump, hold debates before the upcoming election. In a video posted online, Biden playfully challenged Trump by saying, “Give me a treat, buddy. I’m ready to do it even twice. Let’s set the dates, Donald. I heard you’re free on Wednesdays.” This comment was in reference to the fact that Trump has been facing a criminal case for a month and the New York court takes a break on Wednesdays.

Trump quickly accepted Biden’s challenge for two debates before the November elections, stating on his social network, “I’m ready and eager. Come on, ready for the fight.” Biden then announced that he would not participate in the fall presidential debates sponsored by the non-partisan commission, instead proposing two debates earlier in the year.

Biden’s campaign suggested that the first debate be held at the end of June and the second in September, before early voting begins. Trump responded, calling the proposed dates completely acceptable and joking about providing transportation. However, Biden’s camp expressed concerns about the Commission on Presidential Debates and has been exploring alternative debate options organized by news organizations.

Biden first indicated his willingness to debate Trump during an interview with radio host Howard Stern, stating, “I’m somewhere. I do not know when. But I am happy to debate with him.” Despite months of uncertainty about whether they would take place
