Kansas City Current Thrills in 1-0 Win Over Utah Royals, Sets NWSL Record for Most Goal Scorers in a Season

KC Holds off Utah to Extend Unbeaten Streak

Kansas City Current secured a thrilling 1-0 win over the Utah Royals in their first-ever match with the expansion side, thanks to a goal from Elizabeth Ball. The decisive goal came in the 58th minute off a Claire Hutton header, with Hutton collecting her first professional assist.

Ball became the Current’s 15th goal scorer and set a new NWSL record with the most goal scorers in a season in just 11 matches. The substitute striker ran to the touchline to hug center-back Gabby Robinson, who had left the game in the 25th minute with a knee injury. The coach mentioned that Robinson will be evaluated once the team returns to Kansas City. Unfortunately, Kansas City could not secure a penalty despite a potential handball by a Utah defender, as VAR ruled that no penalty was committed.

The game began with a 40-minute weather delay, something Kansas City had experienced before with a four-hour delay against the Houston Dash. Despite only having 45% possession, Kansas City dominated with 24 shots (eight on target) compared to Utah’s four shots. Goalkeeper Mandy Haught made some outstanding saves for Utah, while KC’s AD Franch had two saves.

Striker Temwa Chawinga led the charge with nine shots, supported by Debinha with five shots. Bia Zaneratto made a return from a foot injury, playing for the final 20 minutes of the match. After winning seven out of their first eleven games, Kansas City remains undefeated and sits second in the NWSL standings. They will face Seattle Reign FC after the international break on June 9 at 5 p.m., looking to continue their impressive run of form and cement their position as one of the top teams in league history.
