Kansas Leads the Way in Health Insurance Enrollment During 2024 Open Enrollment Period

Enrollment in Kansas’ County-Level Health Insurance Marketplace Projected for 2024

In the 2024 plan year open enrollment period, a record number of Kansans were enrolled in or re-enrolled in a health insurance plan through the federally facilitated marketplace. During this time, 171,376 Kansans selected or were automatically re-enrolled in a health insurance plan. This represents a 37.7 percent increase from the previous year’s enrollment (124,473), which itself was an impressive 15.5 percent increase from 2022 enrollment (107,784). Additionally, during this period, 13,433 Kansans chose to purchase standalone dental insurance plans through the marketplace.

On March 22nd, 2024, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services released summary enrollment data for the eleventh open enrollment period of the federally facilitated health insurance marketplace established by the Affordable Care Act (ACA). The open enrollment period lasted from November 1st, 2023 to January 16th, 2024. Enrollee data shows that there were over four million unique consumers who selected or were automatically re-enrolled into a marketplace health plan for the year (regardless of whether they paid their premiums).

The Kansas Health Institute has prepared statewide maps showing both overall and county-level enrollment numbers for the federally facilitated health insurance marketplace in Kansas during the 2024 plan year. These maps provide valuable insights into healthcare coverage access across the state and can be used to inform policymakers and stakeholders about areas where additional support may be needed. For example, ZIP code mapping for five of Kansas’ most populous counties provides detailed information on which areas have higher rates of uninsured residents and can help identify potential gaps in coverage access within those communities.
