Beatrice Chebet of Kenya Smashes World Record in 10,000 Meters

24-year-old Beatrice Chebet of Kenya has made history at the Prefontaine Classic meet in Eugene by setting a new world record in the 10,000 meters with a time of 28 minutes, 54.14 seconds. This surpassed the previous record of 29:01.03 set by Ethiopia’s Letesenbet Gidey.

Chebet finished ahead of Gudaf Tsegay of Ethiopia, who completed the race in 29:05.92 in cloudy and cool conditions at Hayward Field. At the event, Chebet secured her place among the top runners in the world of distance running. She won a silver medal in the 5,000 meters at the world championships held at Hayward Field in 2022 and secured a bronze medal in the same event at the previous year’s championships in Budapest.

The Prefontaine Classic serves as one stop on an international Diamond League series that attracts top athletes from around the world to compete in various track and field events. Chebet’s record-breaking performance will surely solidify her status as one of the rising stars in long-distance running.
