Kombucha: Fermented Tea’s Health Benefits and Risks, and Be FAST in May for Stroke Awareness

Kombucha, a fermented tea drink, has gained popularity as a health beverage on social media. However, it’s essential to understand the potential risks associated with consuming this drink. While many experts claim that it is safe for most people, there are some important factors to consider before trying it out. Firstly, the full extent of its health benefits is still not fully understood, and proper preparation is crucial to ensure its safety. Lexi Fitzgerald, an OSF HealthCare dietitian, recommends purchasing Kombucha from a reputable source or following a reliable recipe if making it at home. It’s vital to handle the ingredients with care and avoid unsafe or unclean conditions that may cause harmful bacteria to grow and lead to illness. Young children, pregnant women, and individuals with weakened immune systems should avoid consuming Kombucha due to the presence of bacteria.

On a different note, May is Stroke Awareness Month, and it’s time for us to recognize the signs of stroke using the acronym BEFAST: Balance, Eyes, Face, Arms, Speech, and Time. If you suspect someone is having a stroke, check for any abnormalities in their balance, eyes, face, arms or speech. The “T” in BEFAST stands for time – emphasizing the importance of calling 9-1-1 immediately. Leslie Ingold
