Lake Erie College is set to receive a significant boost to its health-science initiatives with the announcement of a $500,000 award from the Ohio Senate. The funding, part of the Capital Budget proposal Senate Bill 292, will help the college renovate and expand lab spaces, introduce new majors, and prioritize the addition of an exercise science program. The goal is to complement existing health science offerings and provide pathways for students interested in careers such as physical and exercise therapy, sports medicine, and more.
State Rep. Jamie Callender and State Sen. Jerry Cirino played key roles in securing this funding for Lake Erie College. President Jennifer Schuller expressed gratitude for their support, noting that the project will help attract new students and faculty members while keeping the college competitive. The investment in campus facilities reflects the college’s commitment to offering high-quality, in-demand programs that prepare graduates for success in the health care sector.
Johnathan Tedesco, dean of the School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, highlighted that the new major will build on Lake Erie’s existing program offerings in nutrition and biology. The college’s strong science curriculum will support the program and provide opportunities for collaboration with Lakeland Community College, local businesses, and community organizations in developing programs that meet the region’s needs. The exercise science program is set to launch in the fall of 2025 with founding faculty members set to begin their search in coming months.
