Logging with Purpose: Balancing Dollar Signs with Environmental Preservation

Vermont logging company faces fine

David Wilcox, a Watershed Forester with the Agency of Natural Resources, emphasizes the importance of implementing good water quality practices in the logging industry. He acknowledges that loggers face challenges in meeting Acceptable Management Practices (AMPs), such as high costs and unpredictable weather conditions. Despite these obstacles, Wilcox stresses the need for loggers to balance logging activities with environmental preservation.

Matt McAllister, a longtime logger in Vermont, has encountered numerous challenges on logging sites throughout his career. However, despite facing various issues, McAllister remains dedicated to following AMPs to uphold water quality standards. As a native Vermonter, he understands the importance of maintaining clean water and believes that most AMPs are just common sense.

Thomson Timber Harvesting and Trucking LLC is one logging company that has been fined for not meeting AMPs regulations. Despite efforts by the state to educate loggers about AMPs and make the rules clear and easy to follow, some loggers still struggle to meet the requirements.

The state works diligently to protect Vermont’s natural resources from soil runoff, erosion, and habitat damage. To help loggers comply with regulations effectively, the state is exploring ways to provide financial assistance. By implementing good water quality practices, loggers can balance their activities with environmental preservation while also avoiding costly fines and potential damage to natural resources.
