McDonald’s Repurchases 225 Branches in Israel from Local Franchisee Amidst Calls for Boycotts

McDonald’s Acquires 225 Restaurants from Israeli Franchise Owners

McDonald’s has announced that it will repurchase its 225 branches in Israel from local franchisee Alonyal. The decision comes amidst calls for boycotts due to the conflict in the Gaza Strip. Alonyal Limited’s boss, Omri Padan, announced the agreement to sell the franchise to the McDonald’s group. The transaction amount was not disclosed and is subject to certain conditions, expected to be completed in the coming months.

Alonyal first signed licensing deals with McDonald’s over three decades ago, employing more than 5,000 people in the restaurants. McDonald’s has assured that all Alonyal restaurants will be retained and employees will continue to work under similar conditions. Jo Sempels, CEO of McDonald’s global franchises, stated that the company remains committed to the Israeli market even after facing challenges due to the conflict in the Middle East.

The war in the Gaza Strip between Israel and Hamas has had an impact on McDonald’s sales, with the chain facing difficulties in various Muslim countries and regions with significant Muslim populations. Despite the challenges, McDonald’s continues to operate in these markets and strives to maintain its presence. The decision to repurchase its branches in Israel reflects the company’s commitment to navigating through difficult situations and maintaining its global operations.
