Navigating Legal Ethics in Healthcare: Insights from Bill Hopkins at EMI Conference

Bill Hopkins Leads Discussion on Artificial Intelligence Ethics at Health Care Law Conference

Bill Hopkins from Spencer Fane recently presented at the 25th annual Emerging Issues in Healthcare Law Conference (EMI) hosted by the American Bar Association Health Law Section from April 3-6 in New Orleans. During his session titled “AI and Legal Ethics: Considerations for Health Care Attorneys,” he discussed the legal ethics issues that health care attorneys face as artificial intelligence becomes increasingly prevalent. He was joined by Jason Lacey from IMA Financial Group, and they explored topics such as the use of generative AI in legal tasks and document preparation, as well as the evolving rules and guidelines that may limit such use. They also delved into specific ethical concepts such as technology competence, maintaining confidentiality and privilege, and discharging supervisory obligations.

The EMI conference covered a range of timely topics including DOJ enforcement, emerging therapies and alternative substances in healthcare, the Physician Self-Referral Law, the mental health crisis, and private equity. Attendees had the opportunity to network, explore New Orleans, and attend a scholarship and awards reception.

In his role as Office Managing Partner for the Austin office at Spencer Fane, Bill assists health care providers and companies navigate the complex industry. He serves on the firm’s DEI Committee and provides legal advice in administrative law, regulatory defense, transactional work, compliance, and litigation.
