Negaunee Garden Project Receives $8,500 Grant to Cultivate Learning and Teamwork through Gardening

The Negaunee Public Schools Garden Project received a grant of $8,500 from the Superior Health Foundation to support their Lakeview School Garden Growing Gardeners project. This grant will be used to create a healing garden within the school’s garden, establish student learning areas, participate in the Negaunee Farmer’s Market, and hold a Fall Harvest Festival.

Sarah Weaver, chair of the Negaunee Public Schools Garden Project, expressed her excitement about the grant and the opportunities it will provide for students to learn hands-on gardening skills. She emphasized the importance of teaching children about planting seeds, growing plants, and the value of teamwork and collaboration through gardening.

Jim LaJoie, executive director of the Superior Health Foundation, highlighted the organization’s commitment to providing grants for indigent care and funding for those less fortunate who lack access to essential health services. He also revealed that he would be retiring from his position as executive director after 11 years at the foundation.

LaJoie reflected on the impact that the Superior Health Foundation has had over the years, awarding over $6 million in grants since 2012. He expressed his gratitude for having been involved with the organization and for its positive impact on the community. The event was viewed as an opportunity to give back in alignment with the foundation’s core goals and values.
