Netflix is phasing out its cheapest ad-free plan, forcing users in regions like the UK and Canada to choose a new plan to maintain their subscription. The company has been contemplating changes to its subscription offerings for some time, including the introduction of a more affordable ad-based plan, the end of shared accounts, and price increases.
A few months ago, Netflix announced that it would no longer offer the ad-free Basic plan to new subscribers in Canada and the United Kingdom. Shortly after, it revealed that existing users who had the Basic plan would also be affected by this change.
Reddit users who had subscribed to the ad-free Basic plan in these countries reported receiving an email from Netflix announcing the end of this format. The company has also updated its application interface to reflect this change, indicating that the Basic plan has been discontinued. Users are advised to choose another subscription plan to continue accessing content, or else their profile activity will be suspended. Current subscribers must now select either the ad-supported plan, the standard plan without ads, or the Premium plan.
It is unclear when this change will be rolled out to other regions. In the meantime, users in the UK and Canada are being required to switch to a different plan to continue enjoying Netflix’s streaming content.
