New Blood on ‘The NFL Today’: Matt Ryan Joins the Show

Matt Ryan replaces Phil Simms and Boomer Esiason on ‘NFL Today’

In the first round of the NFL Draft, there were both surprising and expected picks made on the first night of the event. Mackenzie Salmon provides insights into this exciting night of football action.

As CBS Sports prepares for its annual coverage of the NFL, the network announced some changes to its pregame show. Longtime analysts Phil Simms and Boomer Esiason will not be returning, while former league MVP Matt Ryan will join “The NFL Today.” Ryan retired from the NFL last week after a successful career with the Atlanta Falcons and joined CBS Sports last season as an NFL game analyst. He appeared in the studio during the playoffs and Super Bowl, and is now set to become a regular part of “The NFL Today.”

Simms had been with CBS for nearly 20 years, while Esiason spent over two decades on the “NFL Today” set. Both analysts had their contracts expire after the Super Bowl, and CBS decided not to renew them. Esiason will continue his work with CBS through his radio show on WFAN, which is also simulcast on CBS Sports Network.

Ryan expressed excitement about joining “The NFL Today” and continuing to contribute to its high standards set by his predecessors. He has over 60,000 career passing yards and an MVP award under his belt, making him a valuable addition to the iconic pregame show.
